Unique Flintlock Musket from the Middle East

Here we present an antique Moroccan/North African Style Flintlock Musket, made circa early 1800s in North Africa. The firearms traditionally in use by the Arab and Berber tribes of Morocco were flintlock muskets. Mostly Jewish gunsmiths who resided in the Kasars of the Tafilalt and Figuig regions in Southeastern Morocco manufactured them. They were made of good quality iron transported from the north along the caravan routes and were often highly ornate and of good quality. These locally manufactured weapons supplemented the considerable numbers of European muskets imported to Morocco throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. This influx of flintlock firearms increased rapidly in the mid nineteenth century as huge numbers of surplus military flintlocks became available when European armies made the transition to percussion rifles. 

The Barbary Coast was home to much upheaval, as many of the various kingdoms it was comprised of, were member states of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Pirates found their safe havens on the coast and raided the Mediterranean Sea taking slaves. The slave trade was another unsavory reality of the northern coast of North Africa. In fact, piracy and the taking of European and American slaves came to be a great a problem. At various points over the centuries, nations like Spain and the U.S., took military action, Spain in the 1730s and America in 1805.

The overall condition is good. The action does not function. Good bore for its age. This example sports an ornately decorated stock with an expected amount of wear. Lightly engraved lock.
