Flint ELEPHANT GUN for the BELGIAN-AFRICAN Trade Belgian Made for the African Trade
Description: Flint ELEPHANT GUN for the BELGIAN-AFRICAN Trade
Belgian Made for the African Trade
Here we present an antique Large Bore Flintlock “Elephant Gun” by Georges Laloux, made circa the late-1890s in Liege, Belgium. Liege has long been a manufacturing center for the world’s arms trade. These were produced for sale to the African nations and colonies. It was built in a military style and may have been used as a wall gun, but these muskets may have been intended for use against large beasts such as elephants. In fact, Stoeger imported some of these for sale and advertised them as such in their literature. The European countries inhabiting these remote outposts or selling to them were very careful to sell only obsolescent firearms to the natives so that they could maintain the upper hand should tensions rise.
This massive flintlock musket features a gaping .93 caliber smooth bore. The butt plate has a schuetzen style butt plate to aid in stabilizing the weight from the barrel. The barrel bears Liege proof marks. The lock has this maker’s mark on it: a winged insect with his initials “GL”.
The overall condition is very good. The toe of the stock has been repaired and there is a climate related crack under the butt plate in the middle. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action remains strong and crisp. A fascinating and unique piece!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 33-3/4 inches.
Caliber: .93
Overall condition as seen in photos.
