1946 Vintage Winchester Model 70 Rifle in .30-06 Gov't Caliber w/ Lyman 48 WJS Receiver Sight
** Beautiful & Honest Winchester ** SOLD
Description:
This is a true American classic, a 1946 production Winchester Model 70 rifle in .30-06 caliber. This beautiful and clean rifle has obviously been well-cared for over the years and shot very little. It is a "transitional" model with a mix of pre-WW2 and post-WW2 features. This 1946 production model features a pre-war style straight comb checkered Walnut stock, a cloverleaf-style receiver tang, a "Type 2" safety lever, and a Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight with a Lyman front sight blade. This rifle was one of the first that came factory drilled and tapped for optics bases. As you can see from the pictures, the original blue factory finishes on this rifle are in very good condition, with the only real spot of finish wear on the front of the floorplate, the natural balance point where it would be carried when not slung over the shoulder. The factory high gloss blue finish on the barrel is beautiful and bright, showing only a few tiny handling marks. The bright blue finish on the Mauser-style extractor is also in excellent condition, noteworthy as this often shows mechanical wear from the action being worked. The bore in this Winchester is mirror-bright and in excellent condition. The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves throughout the barrel, and there is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections. The internals of this rifle are just as clean and nice as the exterior. The raceways in the receiver show only a touch of finish wear, a great indicator of how much the action was worked over the years (and fired). The original stock on this Winchester is very handsome and in excellent condition overall. The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm are still clean and well-defined, and the stock is completely free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage. All of the original stock hardware is intact and in very good condition, including the sling swivels and checkered steel buttplate. The controls on this Model 70 are all in perfect working order (including the Lyman receiver sight), and the bolt action has to be felt to truly be appreciated. These actions were hand-fit and tuned, and the result is a super-slick action that is smooth and precise. When you turn that bolt handle down it locks into battery with perfection on this rifle. This Model 70 should be just as reliable and accurate today as the day it left the factory 73 years ago. This is truly one of the best rifles ever manufactured in the United States of all-time. All in all, this classic 1946 Winchester Model 70 would be a superb addition to any rifle or gun collection.
