Description:
Offered here is a custom Gary Lee Goudy .375 H&H built on a genuine Mauser-Werke A.G. Oberndorf a/N. Square Bridge action — a refined, field-ready dangerous game rifle combining classic German foundation with American custom craftsmanship.
Serial number 183.
The stock is hand-made by Gary Lee Goudy and is the defining feature of this rifle. It exhibits strong, straight grain through the wrist transitioning into attractive bald head figure through the butt — combining structural strength with understated elegance. The architecture is classic safari style with proper drop and balance.
Length of pull: 13 3/4"
Barrel: 26"
Weight: 9.5 lbs
The checkering is sharply executed and remains in perfect condition — crisp, detailed, and evenly cut throughout. The wood retains approximately 98% condition with only minimal handling evidence.
The rifle is built on an authentic Mauser-Werke A.G. Oberndorf a/N. Square Bridge action, retaining crisp factory markings and excellent metal condition (100%). Controlled round feed operation is smooth and positive.
The rifle retains its original claw mount bases. The original optic was mounted using a Schmidt & Bender rail system; to accommodate modern optics while preserving the rifle’s traditional configuration, New England Custom Gun (NECG) machined a set of custom 30mm claw-mount rings to fit the original bases. The rifle is now fitted with a Leupold VX-6 HD 1–6x24 with Firedot illumination. This configuration provides an exceptionally wide field of view on the low end for dangerous game while offering sufficient magnification for longer plains game shots. The claw mount system ensures reliable return-to-zero while preserving classic safari aesthetics.
The .375 H&H remains one of the most versatile and respected safari cartridges ever developed — equally suited for African buffalo, plains game, elk, moose, or bear.
With its authentic Oberndorf action, hand-crafted Goudy stock, flawless checkering, and modern claw-mounted 1-6x24 optic, this rifle represents a balanced blend of heritage and performance.
A true hunting rifle — not a safe queen — yet refined enough for long-term ownership.
