Marlin 1893 DELUXE RIFLE – FACTORY ENGRAVED NO. 1 PATTERN, CHECKERED XXX WOOD
Description: Marlin 1893 Deluxe .32-40 Rifle FACTORY ENGRAVED NO. 1 PATTERN, CHECKERED XXX WOOD General Specs: Marlin, Year 1902, .32-40, 8lbs, Lever Rifle Serial Number: 258482 What an incredible piece of history we have before us in this Marlin special order rifle. Can you imagine ordering a gun like this in 1901 and taking delivery at the local general store in 1902? What the town's people must have thought, and what pride of ownership the gent must have had. This fine rifle, sn258482, is a very rare example of a factory engraved “deluxe” rifle, with xxx figured wood, hand checkered, and factory engraving likely done by Conrad F. Ulrich. The Cody Firearms Museum letter gives us the basics; Model 1893, .32-40 caliber, 26" barrel, shipped 1902. As noted in Colonel Brophy's seminal book on Marlin guns entitled "MARLIN FIREARMS --- A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them", the early records did not record whether the guns were ordered with engraving, or other special order features. However, the gun does speak for itself, and there is a post on this exact gun on the Marlin Firearms Collectors Association that confirms it as a factory engraved gun by a prominent collector. The 26” full octagon barrel with full length magazine is standard for the .32-40 caliber Model 1893 rifle. The factory barrel blue rates at 95%, with freckling and one small patch of pitting 8” from the muzzle on the exterior, bore is bright with strong rifling, sights are factory issue. The receiver has been nicely restored with perfect screws that are properly nitre blued, in perfect mechanical condition. The wood has been restored with the checkering recut and a Truoil finish. This is a gorgeous rifle that would be an honor to carry in the deer woods, as the .32-40 round is fully capable and still available. It was always known to be a highly accurate cartridge as well. This gun is priced right to sell, especially for a factory engraved rifle with such pretty wood. Thanks for looking!
