Fine Scottish Percussion Half-Stock Sporting Rifle by Wm. MacLauchlan of Edinburgh
Description: NSN, .54 Caliber, 32 1/2" octagon barrel with a good bore that has moderate pitting within the grooves. This is a very handsome rifle with diminutive proportions, suitable for a youth or lady. The barrel and ramrod guide rib have nearly all of a later added blue finish remaining, with the original silver inlays at the breech tarnished to a blue-black patina. The original owner’s name is inlaid along the top flat: "Adam Kuchenreuter." The back-action lock has a tropical game scene vignette, with a stag’s head next to the percussion bolster, a leopard on the trigger guard bow, intricate foliate engraving on the other metal surfaces, and an excellently engraved dolphin hammer. The lock functions flawlessly, and is equipped with a sliding safety that engages at half-cock. The stock is nicely figured walnut, with a checkered wrist, and plain German silver wedge escutcheons. The wood has some minor handling marks scattered about, and a hardly noticeable repair at the toe. A modern brass-tipped ramrod is included. William MacLauchlan (McLauchlan) was an Edinburgh maker who was in business from ca. 1806 & ca. 1847. This example of his work is in fine condition, and would make a great addition to any collection.
