Scarce Engraved G W Bales Double Rifle in .500 Black Powder Express Antique

Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are very proud to offer this sterling example of a George William Bales double hammer rifle. This gunmaker had facilities in London up to 1871, and also in Ipswich. She is a well made double, locking up tight with the crisp latch holding the underlever directly under the trigger guard. The 3 inch .500 rounds fit fairly well, but I have not cast the chambers. The bores of the 28 inch barrels are good, with strong rifling and plenty of shine. This rifle is nicely engraved, and the highly figured walnut is a sight to behold. The stock yields an LOP of 14 7/16 inches, and she is a pleasure to carry and point. The top rib is fitted with 2 folding leaf sights, one for 50, and one for 100 yards. The front sight is very fine, yet easy to set into the notch of the rear sight. This English double likely traveled the world, bringing down African and Indian big game. The 500 was the king of the hill in those days, and could dispatch the largest bull elephant. The hammer springs are strong, and the ebony tipped forend snaps on tightly. All in all, this is one fine rifle. The big bore double rifles are one of the most consistently high priced guns that are on the market. Most have risen into 5 figures, and there is no end in sight. If you have been looking for the right European double rifle to collect, or for investment, but don't want to break the bank, then look no further.
