Sako 75 Hunter No. IV Action .270 Winchester Excellent Condition with Scope
Description: The Sako 75, introduced in 1996, was the successor to the L61R/A-III/A-V series of rifles and represented a departure from previous Sako rifles. Whereas the L61R series used a bolt with two forward locking lugs 180 degrees apart, the 75 utilizes three forward locking lugs approximately 120 degrees apart. The entirety of the bolt, including its handle, is milled from a single piece of cast steel. The 75 also features a mechanical ejector and 5 bolt sliding guides with 70 degree bolt lift. The rifle used a 3-position rear tang safety. The 75 was available in 6 action sizes or lengths, with the first five marked “I” (Roman Numeral 1) through “V” (Roman Numeral 5), whilst the sixth was marked “SM”. This has led to confusion as the rifles are not usually marked with the number 75, only with the action length number. For example, the rifle shown here is stamped “Sako IV” on the left side of the receiver. The “IV” indicates a long (3.34 inches) or .30-06 length action. An “I” would have indicated a short or .223 length action, while a “II” would have been the PPC length action designed for the .22 PPC and 6mm PPC cartridges. A “III” would have indicated the medium length (2.80 inches) action for cartridges like the .243 or .308 Winchester rounds. A “V” would have indicated a magnum (3.60 inches) or .375 H&H length action. The special “SM” action was built for short magnums (hence the SM name) such as the .270 and .300 WSM. The present rifle is chambered for the classic .270 Winchester cartridge, originally introduced in 1925. It was not immediately popular for a variety of reasons. One was that the .270’s relative, the .30-06, was already considered a near universal cartridge and had been around since 1906. There was also the existing 7x57mm Mauser. Although not as popular today, the 7x57 was popular enough back then to have been chambered in both the Model 54 and Model 70 rifles. Plus, 7x57 ammo would have been more readily available. The .270 also stood out in terms of its .277-inch diameter bullet. The only other cartridge to use this bullet diameter prior to the .270 was the 6.8x57 Chinese Mauser, a military cartridge used in the Chinese M1907 Mauser rifle. As the rifles were rechambered for the standard 8x57 Mauser fairly quickly, most people have never even heard of the 6.8x57 round. The .270 picked up in popularity after World War II once American hunters realized the .270 could shoot a flatter trajectory than its cousin the .30-06. Available bullets for the .270 range from the light weight 90 gr bullets up to the heavy 160 gr bullets. As a general rule of thumb, the 90 to 110 gr bullets are for varmints and small deer, 130 gr for mid-size deer, sheep, mountain goats, and antelope, while the 140 gr to 160 gr are for large deer, elk, caribou, and even moose. The 130-gr bullet is the most popular followed closely by the 150-gr bullet. Returning to the 75, the rifle is in excellent shape, and does not appear to have seen a great deal of use. The bluing is in superb condition with only a couple of miniscule rust spots on the barrel that have only just started to form and should be fairly easy to remove. The wood has only minor handling wear for the most part. There is a small spot on the left side of the body where matte lacquer is worn. The trigger has small spot on the left side where oil has pooled and then dried. The bore is nearly pristine with no rust or pitting present. The rifle is fitted with a nice Leupold Vari-X-IIC scope with 4-12x magnification. There is a visible scratch on the outside of the eye bell of the scope. A nice leather sling has also been fitted to the rifle. Overall, the Sako 75 Hunter in .270 Winchester would make for an excellent multi-purpose rifle being able to be used against a wide variety of game ranging from coyote to elk.
