The German drilling is widely regarded as the ultimate continental hunting firearm, designed to provide the hunter with maximum versatility in the field. This example, produced by Franz Schmidt during the Weimar-era golden age of German gunmaking, embodies that philosophy perfectly. Built in the Suhl tradition, this elegant combination gun provides both shotgun and rifle capability in a single beautifully crafted firearm.

Mechanically, this drilling features the classic German boxlock break-action system with side-by-side 16 gauge shotgun barrels over a centrally positioned rifle barrel chambered in the powerful 8x57JR rimmed sporting cartridge. The firearm operates via double triggers with a tang-mounted selector allowing the shooter to engage the rifle barrel when needed. This arrangement allowed European hunters to instantly transition from bird or hare to larger game such as roe deer or boar without changing firearms.

The 16 gauge shotgun barrels offer an excellent balance of weight and pattern performance for upland hunting, while the 8x57JR rifle barrel delivers proven continental big game performance. This combination was one of the most popular drilling configurations throughout Germany and Austria during the interwar period and remains highly sought after among collectors and traditional hunters today.

Craftsmanship on this piece is unmistakably German. The receiver is adorned with traditional game scene engraving depicting roe deer and stag motifs surrounded by classic oak leaf scrollwork. The finely shaped walnut stock features a cheekpiece and hand-cut checkering, while the buttstock includes a traditional cartridge trap — a hallmark feature of quality European hunting guns.

For collectors of classic European sporting arms, drillings from the Suhl region represent some of the finest examples of practical hunting gunmaking. With its desirable 16 gauge / 8x57JR configuration, Weimar-era manufacture, and traditional claw-mounted optics, this Franz Schmidt drilling represents a highly appealing example of Germany’s legendary combination gun tradition.
