History: The Mannlicher Schönauer rifle action was developed at the Austrian Arms Factory at Steyr, Austria in 1900. Named for its inventors, Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher and Otto Schoenauer, these actions incorporate a number of features that were revolutionary at the time of their introduction. The rifle went through a few cosmetic changes through its production and most were noted by the production year i.e. 1956. All models came with a flat "butter knife" bolt handle that was located well forward of the trigger guard. This was due to the design of the short stroke action, which had a split rear receiver ring through which the bolt handle passed as it was drawn back. Cartridges were fed from a Schönauer spool magazine (hence the name Mannlicher-Schönauer). All screws were indexed, and this was done throughout the entire production life of M-S rifles and carbines. The buyer had the option of a double set trigger or a single trigger. The double set trigger was the more popular option. Despite updates in design and styling, by the 1960s the Mannlicher-Schönauer was succumbing to the same economic pressures that stymied its military sibling. The complicated machining and hand-fitting that economically doomed the rifle as a military arm spelled the demise of the turn-of-the-century design as a sporting firearm. The last of the Mannlicher Schönauers were built in the late 1960s with rifles still being assembled from parts into the early ’70s. It was one of the last classic firearms that went out of production following World War II and marked the end of an era of hand-built factory guns.
This is an extraordinary bolt action rifle built by the fine rifle builders in Austria and chambered in a popular American cartridge. This gun is over 50 years old and meets the requirements of the C&R license. I offer a three-day non-firing inspection period and always want the buyer to be satisfied with their purchase. I ship rifles in a hard rifle case to your dealer for the actual cost of the case and shipping. This gun requires a C&R or FFL license for transfer. I ship the following day after the payment arrives and provide tracking information. Please see my other collectible firearms that I have listed.
