This Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 Short Rifle represents one of the most recognizable and historically significant infantry arms fielded by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Chambered in the powerful 7.7×58mm cartridge, the Type 99 was developed as a stronger successor to the earlier 6.5mm Type 38 and became Japan’s primary frontline battle rifle throughout the Pacific conflict. This example retains several of the collector features enthusiasts actively seek, including its intact Imperial Chrysanthemum crest, original dust cover, and anti-aircraft rear sight wings.

Built around the famously robust Arisaka action, the Type 99 earned a reputation for exceptional strength and reliability under harsh battlefield conditions. The controlled-feed bolt system, dual locking lugs, generous extractor, and durable military construction made it one of the strongest service rifle actions of the Second World War. Its 26-inch barrel provided excellent ballistic performance from the 7.7 Japanese cartridge while maintaining practical handling characteristics for infantry service.

Nagoya Arsenal was among the largest producers of Type 99 rifles during the war. The intact chrysanthemum visible on the receiver indicates the rifle was not formally surrendered through postwar arsenal channels where the Imperial crest was commonly ground or defaced. The presence of the anti-aircraft sight wings and original dust cover further aligns this rifle with earlier wartime production standards before later wartime simplifications reduced manufacturing complexity.

From a collector standpoint, the surviving mum alone significantly elevates desirability. Original dust covers are frequently missing due to field removal and postwar loss, making their presence a major advantage. The rifle exhibits honest military wear throughout with visible service character in the wood and metal. The stock shows chipping at the receiver inlet area, but the rifle retains the features that advanced Arisaka collectors prioritize when evaluating wartime examples.

Finding a Nagoya Type 99 with an intact mum, original dust cover, anti-aircraft wings, and strong overall military configuration is becoming increasingly difficult as collector demand continues to grow. This is the kind of Pacific War bring-back rifle that immediately stands out in an Arisaka collection—a genuine piece of Imperial Japanese military history that still displays the features collectors hope to find but rarely see surviving together.
