The John Rigby & Co. London Best .416 Rigby is a true modern classic from one of the most prestigious names in British gunmaking. Built in 1995 during the Paul Roberts era of Rigby production, this rifle represents the revival of traditional London best-quality dangerous game rifles and offers collectors and hunters an opportunity to own an authentic Rigby-built .416 Rigby from one of the company’s most respected modern periods.
Built on a classic Mauser-style controlled-round-feed action, the rifle features a 3-position safety, drop-belly floorplate, and a massive claw extractor—exactly the sort of robust and reliable system demanded for dangerous game hunting. Chambered in the legendary .416 Rigby, the rifle carries a 4+1 capacity and weighs 10 pounds 8.6 ounces bare or 10 pounds 13.3 ounces with rings installed, placing it squarely within ideal dangerous game rifle weight specifications for recoil control and proper handling.
The rifle is fitted with a 24" barrel and traditional express sights, including a standing rear express sight mounted on quarter rib and a ramped, banded, hooded front sight. Included are beautifully executed Holland & Holland-style 30mm quick-detachable scope rings, allowing seamless transition between iron sights and optics while preserving traditional dangerous game rifle aesthetics.
This example remains in excellent overall condition, showing only very faint wear typical of careful use. The bore is clear with sharp rifling, the action is smooth, the trigger is crisp, and the rifle is mechanically excellent throughout.
The metalwork on this rifle is exceptional and displays the level of refinement expected from Rigby’s London Best rifles. The blued receiver is marked “J. Rigby & Co London England” on the left side, while the top of the action ring carries the iconic inscription “Rigby’s Special .416 Bore For Big Game.” The bolt shroud is case color hardened with “SAFE” inlaid in gold, while the extractor and lifter are finished in nitre blue.
The bottom metal is particularly striking. The blued drop-belly floorplate features “.416 Cal Rigby” inlaid in gold within a gold circle, surrounded by large engraved scroll chevrons and extensive border engraving. The serial number is inlaid in gold on the trigger guard. Additional case color hardening and engraving appear throughout the bottom metal and hardware.
The included quick-detachable scope rings are themselves miniature works of art, case color hardened and engraved, with “J. Rigby & Co London” engraved on the front ring and “416 Rigby No. 6834” engraved on the rear ring. The barrel is also engraved in traditional Old English script style with “J. Rigby & Co London, England.” A barrel-banded sling swivel further emphasizes the rifle’s true dangerous game pedigree.
The rifle is stocked in beautifully figured deluxe walnut with a right-hand cheekpiece and classic English styling. Additional details include a sling swivel mounted near the toe line, a gold oval engraved with a crest on the belly of the stock, and a case color hardened trapdoor pistol grip cap containing a spare front night sight. The stock retains sharp checkering throughout and is fitted with a traditional English orange recoil pad. Only light handling marks are present, consistent with careful ownership.

This rifle is an outstanding example of Rigby’s modern London Best production under Paul Roberts and represents far more than simply another dangerous game rifle. It is an authentic Rigby-built .416 from one of the company’s most celebrated modern eras—combining classic British craftsmanship, dangerous game functionality, and timeless elegance in one extraordinary package.
