SAVAGE 1899 20" CARBINE IN RARE .25-35 CALIBER, #82XXX, MADE 1909
Description: SAVAGE 1899 20" CARBINE IN RARE .25-35 CALIBER, #82XXX, MADE 1909. The standard caliber for this model was .303 Savage. A number were made in .30-30 and after that relatively few were made in .25-35, .32-40 and .38-55. I believe it annoyed Arthur Savage to put Winchester caliber cartridges chambered in his rifles, but the demand was there and like Marlin, they needed to sell rifles. The barrel shows good thinning blue with excellent markings. It is fitted with a Marbles folding rear barrel sight along with a small blade/bead front sight with matching and correct for this model Marbles tang sight. The stock and forend are fine and there don't appear to be any of the usual hairline cracks coming back from the upper tang of the receiver- part of which is hidden by the tang sight. The steel butt plate is Savage marked, but not serial numbered to match on the inside when removed. The wood under the butt plate is serial numbered to match the receiver. The receiver is mostly uncleaned dull gray with good blue in the protected areas and on the upper portion ahead of the tang sight and above the lever. The bore is a little dark, but NOT pitted with good rifling all the way through. Tight action and good magazine spring in the brass rotor magazine with counter on the left side of the receiver. A very hard to find early Carbine in a rare caliber. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .25-35 Winchester Manufacturer: SAVAGE Model: 1899 CARBINE Serial Number: 82XXX Barrel Length: 20 Condition: VG Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
