The Savage Model 1899 is one of the most innovative and influential lever-action rifles ever produced. Designed by Arthur Savage, the Model 1899 introduced features far ahead of its time, including a rotary magazine that allowed the safe use of pointed bullets and a cartridge counter built into the receiver. These advancements helped establish the Model 1899 as one of America's premier sporting rifles and laid the foundation for the later Savage Model 99, which remained in production for nearly a century. Manufactured in 1909, this example is chambered in .303 Savage, the cartridge for which the Model 1899 originally gained much of its early popularity. Developed specifically for Savage's revolutionary lever-action design, the .303 Savage earned an excellent reputation as a deer and black bear cartridge throughout the northeastern United States and Canada. The rifle features a handy 22.25-inch barrel and weighs 8 pounds 3 ounces, providing excellent balance for field use. The classic Savage lever action remains smooth in operation, while the trigger is crisp and the bore remains clear. Mechanically, the rifle presents as a solid and functional example of this iconic design. This rifle is fitted with a desirable flip-up tang-mounted peep sight located on the wrist of the stock. Combined with the adjustable rear barrel sight and bead front sight, the tang sight provides a significantly improved sight picture and was a popular period upgrade for hunters seeking greater accuracy. Condition is described as good overall, showing honest wear consistent with more than a century of use. The action remains smooth, the trigger is crisp, and the bore is clear. The wood and metal retain the appearance expected of a well-cared-for sporting rifle from this era. A particularly attractive feature is the rifle's deluxe walnut stock, displaying beautiful scalloped grain patterns that stand well above the standard wood typically encountered on early Savage rifles. The enhanced figure of the walnut contributes significantly to the rifle's visual appeal and gives it the appearance of a higher-grade sporting arm. The rifle retains the classic lines that made the Model 1899 famous, including its sleek receiver profile and graceful stock dimensions. With a 13.125-inch length of pull, it shoulders naturally and remains surprisingly modern in feel despite being well over a century old. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition. Early Savage Model 1899 rifles continue to attract strong interest from collectors and hunters alike due to their historical importance, innovative design, and practical shootability. This 1909-production example combines the desirable .303 Savage chambering, a factory-style deluxe walnut stock, and a period tang peep sight, making it an appealing addition to any collection of classic American sporting arms.
