The Savage 99-300 refers to a Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle chambered in the .300 Savage cartridge, which was introduced by Savage Arms in 1920 to provide more power for the Model 99/1899 rifle. The Model 99 itself was designed by Arthur Savage and introduced in 1899 as a revolutionary hammerless rifle with a rotary magazine that allowed for the use of spitzer (pointed) bullets, which was a significant advantage over tubular magazines. The .300 Savage cartridge was a highly popular chambering for the rifle and was the basis for the development of the military 7.62x51mm NATO and civilian .308 Winchester cartridges in the 1950s.
