Savage Model 1895, .303 Caliber
Description: This is an interesting rifle, one of the earliest Savages ever. I understand that the serial numbers for the Model 1895's actually began above 3000 and ended well short of 10,000. It has a tiny "JM" mark on the barrel to indicate that it was actually produced by the John Marlin Company, as all the 1895's were. Although the receiver bluing is nearly all gone after 127 years, the barrel retains just about all of its bluing which is of course trending toward a plum color to some extent. The bore appears excellent, clean and shiny with strong lands and grooves. I'm not an expert but it certainly looks good to me, and I did clean it myself. A few negatives and then back to more positives. The sights are nothing to write home about and that front screw supposedly helping hold down the Marble sight is there mainly due to Loctite - the hole is stripped out and will need to be addressed. The butt stock and butt plate are numbered alike but do not match the receiver number. However, they share a bona fide Model 1895 serial number, 5651 as I recall. The forend has no number but the wood appears to be an obvious close match to the butt stock. The butt plate has a bit of exterior corrosion in a couple of spots but there is none on the inside of it. Back to positives. The wood is splendid and still wears its original finish. There are no cracks except for what I might term two miniature "proto-cracks" at the tang. The one that isn't depicted is identical to the one seen in one of the photos. It's in the corresponding position on the other side. There are a few scratches and little dents here and there but that's about all. The action is probably the slickest I've ever operated on a lever gun. It feels quick and slippery and locks up tight with little effort. The safety operates smoothly and stays where it needs to be. I sincerely hope this rifle will go to a good home. I think it would be a terrific candidate for a Turnbull-caliber restoration. Shipping will be $40 in the continental US. Since this rifle qualifies as an antique no FFL or C&R are required, but I will want to have some form of picture identification along with payment. I'm a private seller so I can accept only a money order, bank check, or personal check as payment. (Personal checks need to clear before shipment, naturally.) I've tried my best to describe things as accurately as I can so as to avoid any unpleasant surprises. That said I can't offer guarantees and am not willing accept a return. And of course, with a firearm this old, if you MUST shoot it, please have an expert gunsmith inspect it beforehand!
