SCARCE, VERY FINE CONDITION SAVAGE 1895 HALF OCT. RIFLE, #7XXX, LETTER, SHIPPED 1896.
Description: SUPER SCARCE, VERY FINE CONDITION SAVAGE 1895 HALF OCTAGON RIFLE, #7XXX, LETTER, SHIPPED 1896. These early forerunners to the famed Savage Model 1899 all have serial numbers under 10,000. They are seldom seen and most that I’ve seen over the decades have been in hard used and often abused condition. All were made in .303 Savage (brass readily available for those so inclined). This example is a rare 26” half-octagon barrel variant. It retains all the 1895 features (some were updated to Model 1899s) including the round hole for magazine cartridge counter in top of the bolt etc. The barrel retains nearly all the blue with excellent markings, buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Rocky Mountain blade front sight. The receiver is mostly an uncleaned gray. Stock is solid without the usual cracks normally found on 1895s and 1899s. The forend is also excellent with both showing only light handling. Tight action and bright excellent sharp bore! I called in to the Cody Museum and got a call-in sheet on this one which confirmed half-oct. Barrel and showed it was accepted on July 8, 1896 and shipped September 3, 1896 to H. C. Squires and Son who were New York importers and dealers. A great Savage find!
