Description:
FINE Factory Engraved M1903 SAVAGE ARMS .22 RF Slide Action BOYS Rifle C&R

EARLY 20th Century .22 Caliber S, L, LR Youth Rifle

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Factory Engraved Savage Arms Corporation Model 1903 Slide Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York circa 1910 with a production run between 1903 and 1922 with factory floral pattern engraving on the receiver. The Savage Model 1903 was an early attempt by Savage to produce embellished rimfire rifles straight from the factory. Introduced as a slide-action .22 capable of firing shorts, longs, and long rifle cartridges, it featured a 24-inch octagon barrel and checkered walnut stock, making it a step above basic utility rifles. Manufactured until 1922, factory engraving was available but uncommon, as most buyers preferred functional rifles over decorative ones. The floral engraving on the receiver aimed to compete with Winchester and Remington’s higher-grade rimfires, adding a neat, simple design to enhance appearance without high cost. The octagon barrel distinguished the Model 1903 from competitors with round barrels, appealing to shooters seeking a more refined rimfire.

Savage Arms Corporation manufactured firearms in Utica, New York during this period. The company built its reputation on affordable, accurate rifles that competed effectively against larger manufacturers like Winchester and Remington. The Model 1903 sold well enough to stay in production for over a decade before being replaced by newer designs. Finding a factory engraved Model 1903 today is uncommon since most buyers ordered plain rifles. The engraved examples that survive show Savage’s willingness to offer custom features during the early 20th century rimfire market.

The overall condition is fine. Original finishes with a plum patina on the barrel. Excellent action. Shiny bore with strong rifling. This example sports a solid stock and forend with an average amount of handling wear, dings, and scuffs. Markings are clear and legible. Nicely engraved receiver. The wrist checkering is sharp.
