Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Factory Engraved Savage Arms Corporation Model 1903 Slide Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York circa 1910. The production run was between 1903 and 1922. This one features factory floral pattern engraving on the receiver, fancy walnut stock with a pistol grip, premium checking and decorative carving at the top of the checkered pistol grip. Factory engraving was available but uncommon for this model.

Savage Arms Corporation manufactured firearms in Utica, New York during this period. The company built its reputation on affordable, accurate rifles that competed effectively against larger manufacturers like Winchester and Remington. The Model 1903 sold well enough to stay in production for over a decade before being replaced by newer designs. Finding a factory engraved Model 1903 today is uncommon since most buyers ordered plain rifles. The engraved examples that survive show Savage’s willingness to offer custom features during the early 20th century rimfire market.

This example sports a solid stock and forend with an average amount of handling wear, dings, and scuffs. Markings are clear and legible. Nicely engraved receiver. The wrist checkering is sharp.
