SAVAGE ARMS M99 .300 Savage Lever Action Hunting/Sporting Rifle C&R w/SCOPE 1954 NEW YORK Manufactured Rifle w/WEAVER SCOPE
Description: SAVAGE ARMS M99 .300 Savage Lever Action Hunting/Sporting Rifle C&R w/SCOPE 1954 NEW YORK Manufactured Rifle w/WEAVER SCOPE Here we present a C&R Savage Arms Model 1899 Lever Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York in 1954. The founder of Savage Arms, Arthur W. Savage was a restless and very productive sort who did a little bit of everything during his lifetime. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica to British parents in 1857. He went to school in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States and then in the UK. From there he moved about until he found himself in Australia looking for precious stones, exploring, homesteading and running cattle. He married and started his family (8 children) there before moving to Jamaica to try his hand at agriculture. Some sources say that he grew coffee and some bananas; likely, it was both. Moving on from there, he managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York. In the meantime, he was tinkering with firearms design. This rifle is considered by some to be the pinnacle of lever action technology. Its unique magazine enabled the use of spire point ammunition in a lever action rifle since spire points in a tubular magazine like the Winchester or Marlin might set off a primer and cause a catastrophic event for the gun and the user. This is also a favorite cartridge of many a hunter. Famed hunter and outdoors writer Ben East told the story of how he once went on a polar bear hunt with his Savage 99 in .300 Savage and killed a bear with his final shot, just before the bear reached him. Most hunters today use them for deer and other medium sized game. The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The stock and forend are fine. Deep checkering. The action is strong.
