SAVAGE ARMS Model 1899 .300 Savage TAKEDOWN Hunting/Sporting Rifle C&R
1951 NEW YORK MADE Lever Action Rifle
Description: SAVAGE ARMS Model 1899 .300 Savage TAKEDOWN Hunting/Sporting Rifle C&R 1951 NEW YORK MADE Lever Action Rifle Here we present a C&R Savage Arms Model 1899 Lever Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York in 1951. The founder of Savage Arms, Arthur W. Savage was a restless and very productive sort who did a little bit of everything during his lifetime. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica to British parents in 1857. He went to school in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States and then in the UK. From there he moved about until he found himself in Australia looking for precious stones, exploring, homesteading and running cattle. He married and started his family (8 children) there before moving to Jamaica to try his hand at agriculture. Some sources say that he grew coffee and some bananas; likely, it was both. Moving on from there, he managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York. In the meantime, he was tinkering with firearms design. By 1894, he seemed to have found his niche and founded his namesake company. Going up against the likes of Winchester, Savage began his firearms line with a lever action rifle, the Model 1895. His Model 1899 is perhaps his most endearing. The cartridges and detachable rotary magazine he developed are two of his most lasting impacts in the firearms industry today. True to character he sold out of the company in about 1905 and moved to California, where he founded the highly successful Savage Tire Company and continued to dabble in firearms. This rifle is considered by some to be the pinnacle of lever action technology. Its unique magazine enabled the use of spire point ammunition in a lever action rifle since spire points in a tubular magazine like the Winchester or Marlin might set off a primer and cause a catastrophic event for the gun and the user. This is also a favorite cartridge of many a hunter. Famed hunter and outdoors writer Ben East told the story of how he once went on a polar bear hunt with his Savage 99 in .300 Savage and killed a bear with his final shot, just before the bear reached him. Most hunters today use them for deer and other medium sized game. “Charles A. Hoffman M.D.” is marked on the left side of the frame. According to a New York Times article dated June 23, 1972, Dr. Charles Anthony Hoffman was born in 1904 in Ironton, Ohio and became president of the American Medical Association on June 22, 1972. He was a conservative from the hills of Appalachia who rose out of near poverty and survived a long illness and a series of personal reversals to make his way in life. “I had to work to eat,” he said of his youth in a statement reflecting the attitude of a self-made man toward national welfare policies. His hobbies included hunting and trap shooting. He and his wife, the former Margaret Lynn Jack, spent their summers on a houseboat, the Carlynn moored on the Ohio River not far from his office. President Richard Nixon appointed him to serve on a commission to investigate the causes of the worsening medical liability climate. In 1978, the twilight of his career, he published a book, “God, Man, and Medicine”, which was as much an autobiography as a guide for patients in the world of health care. He died in 1981. The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Excellent action. Bright, well-rifled bore. Very good stock with average wear. Legible markings. “CHARLES A. HOFFMAN M.D.” is inscribed on the left receiver. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .300 Savage Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
