Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Savage Model 19 NRA Bolt Action Target Rifle, made in Utica, New York during its production run between 1919 and 1937. Smallbore competition saw a tremendous jump in popularity after World War I, and manufacturers gave considerable attention to developing match-grade rifles. Working with the NRA and competitive shooters on the design of a new rifle, Savage Arms introduced the “Model 19 N.R.A. Match Rifle” in 1919. That year, the American Dewar Team used the rifle at the Caldwell, N.J., National Matches, according to period writer F.C. Ness, after which the company made a few improvements to the design. Savage manufactured about 40,000 Model 19 NRA rifles by 1937. Another 6,000 went to the War Department between 1943 and early 1945. 

The founder of Savage Arms, Arthur W. Savage was a restless and very productive sort who did a little bit of everything during his lifetime. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica to British parents in 1857. He went to school in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States and then in the UK. From there he moved about until he found himself in Australia looking for precious stones, exploring, homesteading and running cattle. He married and started his family (8 children) there before moving to Jamaica to try his hand at agriculture. Some sources say that he grew coffee and some bananas; likely, it was both. Moving on from there, he managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York.

The overall condition is nearing fine. Much original finish is preserved, sharing space with a light gray patina. The bore has dimmed, but remains good with serviceable rifling. Strong rifling. The stock is very good with an average amount of handling wear, and light dings. Markings are sharp.
