SCARCE VARIATION, UNALTERED SAVAGE MODEL 1920-1926 BOLT ACTION .300 SAVAGE CALIBER SPORTER, MADE 1926-1931
Description: SCARCE VARIATION AND UNALTERED SAVAGE MODEL 1920-1926 BOLT ACTION .300 SAVAGE CALIBER SPORTER, MADE 1926-1931. The standard Model 1920 (M-20) was made from 1920-1931. It was the first commercial bolt action sporting rifle made in the U.S., beating Winchester and Remington by a number of years (not counting Newton Arms or early mainly black powder bolt rifles). The Savage 1920 was offered only in .250-3000 Savage and .300 Savage calibers and was based on the strong Mauser type action. It was offered in 22" or 24" barrel with open barrel sights. In 1926 the Model 1920-1926 was offered and was basically the same as the standard M-20, but was only offered with 24" barrel and had a Lyman aperture sight mounted on the bolt. This enhanced model only lasted about 5 years and was a victim of the Great Depression. These are much less common than the standard Model 1920 with open sights. Most of these early rifles found today show alterations like recoil pads or drilling and tapping for scope mounting. This example is unaltered and retains the Lyman sight. and the barrel is not dovetailed for a rear barrel sight. These were fairly light and trim rifles with checkered pistol grip and forend, sling-eye studs, steel butt plate and schnable forend tip. This is a fine example with solid and un-cracked stock showing good checkering. The receiver is marked "SAVAGE MODEL 20" and the barrel is caliber marked with normal Savage address markings. The steel floor plate and trigger guard are silvery and the barrel shows very thin blue mixing mainly silver also. The receiver shows some good aged blue. The rifle came out of here in Montana and was obviously carried, but well cared for. Mechanically tight with exc. bore, this one probably has lots of hunting history in it! These don't show up often, especially the variant with Lyman aperture sight.
