This Swiss Model 1889 Schmidt-Rubin represents one of the most important leaps in military-rifle development: a fast, smooth straight-pull action paired with a high-capacity detachable magazine. Long before modern service rifles made rapid bolt manipulation commonplace, the Swiss were fielding this remarkably advanced design with precision-machined components and uncompromising workmanship. This example has been sporterized with a handier 22-inch barrel and shortened walnut stock, giving it a compact profile while preserving the unmistakable mechanical character of the original military action.
The Model 1889 was designed around Switzerland’s early 7.5mm GP90 cartridge and uses a 12-round detachable box magazine, an exceptionally generous capacity for a late-19th-century infantry rifle. Its straight-pull bolt allows the shooter to cycle the action with a direct rearward and forward stroke rather than rotating a conventional bolt handle. The matching serial numbers visible across the receiver, barrel, bolt assembly, and magazine give this rifle strong historical integrity despite its altered sporting configuration.
In the hands, this shortened rifle balances much faster than a full-length Swiss infantry model and carries naturally through timber, brush, or along the firing line. The walnut stock retains its military finger grooves and straight-grip profile, while the large ring-style bolt handle remains easy to grasp with bare or gloved hands. Its graduated ladder rear sight and fixed front blade preserve the purposeful military sighting arrangement, and the included leather sling adds period character.
For the collector who values mechanical innovation, Swiss machining, and unusual repeaters, this Model 1889 delivers serious historical presence without pretending to be a pristine rack rifle.
