R.F. Sedgely Sporter 1903 Springfield - .30-06
Description: This rifle was professionaly sporterized by R.F. Sedgely of Philadelphia, Pa in the early part of the 20th century. R.F. Sedgely bought / took in early production 1903 Springfield Rifles from both Springfield and Rock Island Arsenal and re-annealed and re-heat treated the receivers before turning them into custom sporting rifles. These early 1903 rifles were improperly heat treated and this resulted in brittle steel actions. The U.S. Government sold these low serial number receivers to Sedgely at extremely low prices. There was also a program through the NRA where members could have their low number 1903's inspected and re-heat treated at Sedgley for free. R.F. Sedgley used No. 48 Lyman rear aperture sights and a ramp style front sight on nearly all of their standard sporters and many guns were re-barreled with Winchester barrels. These custom guns began appearing for sale in the late 1920's.
