** SOLD *** Rare 1865 Manufactured .52 Caliber Sharps New Model 1863 Miltary Rifle ** All Original / Exceptional Bore **
Description: Here we have a rather rare .52 caliber Sharps New Model 1863 Military Rifle. The primary Sharps models to see Civil War use were the New Model 1859 and New Model 1863 rifles and carbines. Roughly 6000 New Model 1863 Rifles were produced and delivered to the US government for use by the US military. The rifles featured a 30” round barrel, secured by three spring-retained barrel bands and a combination front sight/bayonet lug that allowed a socket bayonet to be secured to the rifle. An adjustable rear sight of Lawrence’s design graduated to 800 yards, allowing the rifles to be used effectively at longer ranges than conventional muskets. Like the New Model 1859 version before them, the New Model 1863s had blued barrels, color case hardened receivers and walnut furniture. These rifles were manufactured in 1865 and fell in the C30000 to C40000 serial number range. This particular Sharps is in great overall condition, especially for being 158 years old. The barrel has developed a nice brown/grey patina with hints of the original blue. The Receiver has lost all of its original case coloring and has also developed a nice patina for its age. All the markings on both the receiver and barrel and still visible and neither the barrel nor receiver show any signs of major damage, dings, or deep pitting. The original walnut furniture is in great condition with no signs of major damage or repairs. The wood does show the occasional ding/dent and does appear to have shrunk over time. The factory cartouches on the stock and forend are still visible but are rather faint. All the stock hardware including the patch box are in very nice condition and nearly all the screws are unmolested. The bore of this 158-year-old Sharps is absolutely beautiful with a nice shine, strong rifling, and just a hint of pitting throughout. The falling block action is still tight with a solid lock-up and the hammer spring still has plenty of power. This Sharps New Model 1863 Rifle would be an outstanding addition to any collection!
