Of the 6,686 1862 carbines purchased by the Navy from Sharps & Hankins, Philadelphia, between 1862 and 1865, only an handful survive with intact leather barrel covering like this one. The 24"" round leather covered 52 rimfire caliber barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. As previously mentioned, the leather barrel covering is intact and in excellent shape. The frame is marked SHARPS over PATENT over 1859 on the left and SHARPS over & over HANKINS over PHILADA on the right. The frame. lever, and hammer display their original case colors. The stock is excellent with virtually no wear. The sling swivel is present on the butt. The brass butt plate has an even age patina. The action functions correctly. Note to purchaser: Do not fully open the action as the lever will stretch and probably break the lower leather covering. You will never need to upgrade this Sharps & Hankins Navy carbine. It is fit for the finest collection.
