SHARPS MODEL 1878 BORCHARDT MILITARY RIFLE, .45-70 CALIBER, EARLY #7XXX, MADE C.1879.
Description: SHARPS MODEL 1878 BORCHARDT MILITARY RIFLE, .45-70 CALIBER, EARLY #7XXX, MADE C.1879. This hammerless Sharps model was their last before going out of business in 1881. Hundreds of these military models with full length "musket" stocks were purchased by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham in New York City (huge dealers for all the major firearms manufacturers of the time) In the book ARMING THE WEST by Herbert G. Houze, the original shipping records of SH&G are brought forth for the first time. It is interesting to note that as late as 1886 they were still shipping cases (20 rifles to a case) of 1878 Borchardt military models to mid-west and western dealers! Unfortunately, serial numbers are not listed for these sales. Because the Borchardt action is extremely strong, many of these were butchered for their actions during the 1930s-1950s when it was popular to make varmint rifles on stout single shot actions like the Sharps Borchardt and Winchester Highwall. It is thought that about 6,900 Borchardt military models were made with many being sold to foreign countries. Very few were ever used for "military purposes" and most went to civilian shooters and sportsmen. This is a very fine example with a tight action and excellent bright bore. The butt stock and long forearm are in excellent condition, not cracked or chipped, and displaying tight wood to metal fit. It also retains the original checkered steel butt plate. The barrel blue is near full coverage, is deep and shows only minor ageing. The rear sight is the original Lawrence ladder sight with elevation slide. The receiver is mostly a mottled, uncleaned brown. The safety functions correctly by engaging behind the trigger when the lever is raised after loading- often these are found not functioning. In all a really handsome Sharps in very fine condition.
