Indian owned 1859 Sharps Carbine, converted to .50/70 center fire.
Description: This is an extremely rare Indian owned 1859 Sharps Carbine, converted to .50/70 center fire. The stock and the forearm is decorated with a number of tacks, a custom Indians often did to their weapons. Because of the lighting in the majority of the photos, the actual finish of the tacks is shown in picture #12. It has the number 42 circled on both sides of the forearm as well as a carved arrowhead or spear tip. It has the iron hardware, patchbox in the stock. There is no saddle ring bar, possibly refitted with a Civil War Navy ordered 1859 stock at the time of conversion. The carbine is functional and is strong on both half and full cock. This carbine has the cam-type firing pin and original six-groove bore in excellent condition. The DFC in ribbon conversion cartouche can still be seen on the left side of the butt stock, as well as the inspection stamp. Overall condition is very good. These firearms were given to the Indians by the US Government, many of which were cartridge-firing conversions of Sharps percussion carbines. They were chambered in .50-70 and given to reservation residents for “hunting” purposes. Many ended up being pointed at US soldiers. At least 3-dozen of these .50-70s were used at the Little Bighorn Battle and perhaps one at the Battle of the Big Hole. A .50-70 case recovered was definitely from a Sharps but exact model could not be determined. These Indian owned carbines are rarely seen at and bring extremely high prices. There is no doubt this firearm has a lot of history and you can't put a price on it. Very few collectors have one in their collection. Chances are you will never see another one like it.
