RARE Antebellum SHARPS Model 1853 SLANT BREECH .36 Caliber Percussion Rifle
1 of 2,240 Model 1853s with Octagonal Barrel
Description: RARE Antebellum SHARPS Model 1853 SLANT BREECH .36 Caliber Percussion Rifle 1 of 2,240 Model 1853s with Octagonal Barrel Here we present an antique Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Percussion Rifle in .36 Caliber, made circa 1856 with a production run between 1854 and 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Christian Sharps’ 5th model. The carbine version of the Sharps Model 1853 is known for their iconic role in the abolitionist movement, both in the hands of John Brown during his raid of Harper’s Ferry Arsenal, as well as those of abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, who said of the Sharps “that there was more moral power in those instruments, so far as the slaveholders of Kansas were concerned, than in 100 Bibles”. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier. This specimen is a heavy, octagonal barreled, so-called “sporting” rifle (this simply denotes that it was not adopted by a military and would theoretically be used for commercial purposes such as hunting or defending against bandits and such). Only about 2,970 were made, with only 2240 with octagon barrels. It features double set triggers for a fantastic light and crisp trigger break. This is ideal for shooting quarry at longer ranges. The firearm may also be fired without setting the rear trigger. Also includes the Sharps pellet priming system, which could be loaded into a spring-loaded magazine and used instead of the “hat” variety of percussion caps. From hunting buffalo to battles between European Americans and Native Americans, the Sharps made a name for itself as a rugged, powerful and accurate long arm for the rest of the 19th century. The overall condition is good+. Gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. The set trigger is functional as well. The bore is reflective with sharp, deep rifling. The walnut stock shows much use and remains solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 26 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
