Rare Sharps-Borchardt
Model 1878 Military Carbine with Factory Letter 1 of 384 Built
Description: Serial #10151, .45-70 Gov’t. (.45-75 Sharps Straight), 24" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some light freckling within the grooves at the breech end and at the muzzle. This is a handsome carbine that has retained 70-75% of the original blue finish with some gray fading at the muzzle, as well as along the raised edges and projections of the angular frame. The blue merges with a mellow plum-brown patina along the barrel, and there is thin freckling present throughout. There is some further fading on the left side of the frame around the saddle ring, and muted original color case-hardening is present on the breechblock and lever. All of the original Sharps markings are still crisp and clear. The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good-fine shape with small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the fairly thick added varnish finish. Additionally, there is a noticeable bruise to the wood at the heel of the buttstock, and a short hairline with-the-grain crack on the left side of the wrist at the frame juncture. Designed by Hugo Borchardt, these were Sharps’ final carbine with approximately 384 examples eventually produced before the Sharps Rifle Co. ceased operations in 1881. This carbine is accompanied by a 2015-dated Sharps letter from Dr. Lebowskie that lists this carbine as one of twenty carbines shipped to N. Curry & Bros., a gun and sporting goods firm in San Francisco, CA, on December 31, 1878. This is a very good-near fine example of a desirable Sharps-Borchardt military carbine, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique; Antique: Yes Price: $6,750.00 Contact Seller |
