Sharps – Borchardt Model 1878 Rifle by A.O. Zischang
Description: NSN, .35 CF, 28 1/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a truly handsome rifle that has retained about 80-85% of the original blue on the barrel with some fading along the sides, and silvering at the muzzle. A crisp “A.O. ZISCHANG SYRACUSE, N.Y." marking is present at the breech end. The frame retains 90-95% of the original color case-hardening with some pale gray fading at the edges, the gutta-percha side panels are intact, and the rifle is fitted with double-set riggers and a schutzen underlever. The mechanics are tight and functional. The wedge-fastened, checkered walnut forend with schnabel tip is in fine shape with only a few minor handling marks in the lovely original oil finish. The schutzen style buttstock has a checkered, pistol-grip with steel cap, rounded cheek-piece, and silver-plated hooked butt. The condition matches the forend, and the hooked buttplate has developed a violet-blue tarnish. The rifle is outfitted with a windage adjustable target front sight, and a tang-mounted Vernier rear sight, however it is also equipped with a Stevens target scope with intact crosshairs, and clear optics. This is a beautiful Sharps-Borchardt, in excellent condition, and built by one of the great names in early American custom gunsmiths.
