Sharps Borchardt .22/3000 R-2 by C. C. Johnson
Description: SOLD subject to receipt of funds. This Sharps Borchardt was converted to R-2 Lovell in 1938 by C. C. Johnson. In the shop notes Johnson says the original SN for the rifle was #17269 and his job SN was 38105 (derived from this rifle being the 105 job of 1938). These notes were provided by Johnson's grandson who maintains his records. The loaded shell for this caliber closely resembles our current military round. But to me the evolutionary history of this round is even more interesting. I enjoyed shooting a Maynard in 25/20 SS which was popular about the same time this Borchardt was made. That period round was "wildcatted", if that's a word, to produce this .22 Lovell cartridge in the 1930's. The bore on this rifle is excellent, bright and shinney (believe it is 1:16 twist) the wood has a few storage dings. So I can shoot a rifle made in the 1880's with a "hot" wildcat from a cartridge that derived from an 1880 cartridge that looks like a precurssor to a modern military cartridge. That just spins my wheels. Further to stay in character, I reload this cartridge by priming and depriming on a Belding and Mull table top "press" while I reload using their adjustible die (they call it a bullet seater) that once the components are in place swatting it with a hammer!! Presto out pops a loaded shell ready to go. The trigger on this Borchardt is crisp with no travel at 40 oz. There is a Lyman Junior Targetspot scope with fine crosshairs in excellent condition. I have 200, or so, cases, many are loaded. This rifle is a great varmint gun, I put my 22/250 aside to use this one with great effect and personal satisfaction. SOLD Rifle Caliber: .22-3000 2R Lovell Manufacturer: Sharps Model: Borchardt Barrel Length: 26 Condition: Excellent Metal Condition: Excellent Wood Condition: very good Bore Condition: excellent Triggers: single Sights: Lyman Junior Targetspot Manufacture Date: 1881 |
