Sharps Borchardt Model 1878 Mid-Range Rifle 45-70
Description: Serial #7151, .45-2 1/10" Sharps Straight (.45-70), 30" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very handsome rifle that has 80-85% of the original blue remaining on the matching-numbered barrel, with some silvering at the muzzle, as well as some mild fading to smooth plum-brown along its length. The frame retains a large amount of visible color case-hardening, with scattered spots of freckling and mottled pewter gray along the edges and corners. A globe front sight with spirit level is fitted, a vernier rear sight is installed on the wrist, and the barrel dovetail was filled with a blank at some point. The checkered forend and pistol-grip buttstock have scattered small handling marks and small blemishes, with the forend wedge also numbered to the gun. The buttstock once had a sight mount at the heel of the butt, which has since been removed and filled in. The butt has a checkered, hard rubber buttplate that has some minor wear and trace flattening of the points. The action is tight and fully functional. This rifle is listed in the Sharps records as having been shipped to E.S. Harris of New York City on January 9, 1879. The rifle was listed as a "No. 1 Mid-Range Rifle" and was chambered in .40-70 Straight Case with a nickel-plated buttplate. If the caliber listing is correct, it is likely that the rifle was rebarreled at some point by Sharps, as the numbers stamped on the underside of the barrel are identical in size and style to the numbers stamped on the frame. Regardless, this is a handsome rifle, with lots of original finish left, and chambered in a very useful cartridge. Antique SOLD |
