17 lb Sharps 1863 Meacham-Style Conversion
Description: This is a massive Sharps 1863 that was converted in the period into what can only be described as a buffalo rifle. My best guess would be that this was done in the early 1880s after Sharps had closed, as the barrel is mostly unmarked aside from a couple proof marks and the number "18". Just as well, the trend of the day seems to be that the markings were hit and miss, with some guns getting all of them, and some none. Who knows. The condition of this rifle is excellant in my opinion, with original case colors still being visible, and the wood remaining largely undamaged with the exception of a hairline crack in the forearm. The serial number is visible under the tang sight - it is 98472. The action works flawlessly, as do the set triggers. The barrel measures in at 30 inches and 1 1/2 inches across flats. As can be found in old Meacham catalogs, this spec of rifle would have been ordered as a "45-90 to 120". Essentially, it was up to the buyer as to how big of a cartridge they wanted. The barrel is confirmed to be .45 cal., however I am not sure of the exact cartridge. A 45-90 does fit, though with such a heavy gun, I would not be surprised if it was closer to 45-120. This lines up with other examples that I have seen sell at in recent years - a couple rifles exactly like this one have sold at Morphy's, and can be viewed by searching their . The Vernier tang site appears to have been added in the period, as it has a similar level of wear to it. The sights on the barrel appear to be in good condition, however just as well, there is evidence that this rifle previously had a scope on it. All in all, a very cool extra heavy Sharps that is not often seen. If you have any questions, or would like any additional pictures, do not hesitate to ask. The payment methods listed are the only ones that I will accept. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .45 Manufacturer: Sharps Model: 1863 Serial Number: 98472 Barrel Length: 30 |
