Antique “BLEEDING KANSAS” Slant Breech SHARPS Carbine
Description: “BLEEDING KANSAS” Slant Breech SHARPS Carbine Famous for the Free-Staters v. Border Ruffians. While John Browns body lies a-molderng in his grave. Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1854. Only about 10,500 of these carbines were made. They were purchased by civilians and the U.S. military. The Sharps, had a rate of fire of at least 18 shots per minute in the 1857 US Ordnance Trials. It is estimated that over 1,200 Sharps Model 1853 Carbines were smuggled into Kansas by “Abolitionists” such as John Brown and preacher Henry Ward Beecher. These were known as “Beecher’s Bibles” as they were shipped in crates marked “BOOKS”. On the other side were the pro-slavery “Border Ruffians”. There is record of at least 300 going to a St. Louis dealer, for the Border Ruffians. This carbine is serial # 13586. The overall condition is very smooth with almost no external pitting. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock is in good shape with a chip out of the toe. The bore is shinny bright with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Barrel is 21-1/2 inches. Caliber: .52 This is an ANTIQUE and can be shipped directly to you in the USA. We do ship antique arms INTERNATIONALLY.
