Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Lettered Denver Colorado Retailer Carlos Gove & Son Shipped Sharps Model 1874 Single Shot “Hunter’s Rifle” made circa 1877 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Hunter’s Rifle was a variant of the Model 1874 introduced by Sharps in 1875, intended to appeal to the everyman hunter, especially on the Frontier. When the Sharps company made their move to Bridgeport in 1876, the Hunter’s Rifle was kept in the lineup, but it is a rare version of the 1874 Sharps and this model only saw a total production of 451 guns at the Bridgeport facility. The included factory letter lists it as a Model 1874 Hunters rifle in .40 caliber with a 26 inch barrel when shipped to Carlos Gove & Sons of Denver, Colorado on March 26, 1877, with a list price of $28.

Carlos Gove was one of the two notable gunsmiths and retailers in Denver in the late-19th Century, the other being J.P. (John Pray) Lower. These businessmen furnished countless men with the arms necessary to survive and settle the American West, even beyond Colorado.

The overall condition is good. Patinated throughout. Excellent action. The bore is mostly bright, with a frosted appearance towards the muzzle, showing strong rifling. Notches are present on the right buttstock and top of the comb. Both the stock and forearm contain average handling wear, and edge chipping. The rear sling swivel is absent. “Old Reliable” and the Sharps Bridgeport address is on top of the barrel, with “Calibre 40” on top of the breech. A fantastic piece of Colorado history!
