CIVIL WAR SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 .52 CALIBER PERCUSSION CARBINE, #71XXX
Description: CIVIL WAR SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 .52 CALIBER PERCUSSION CARBINE, #71XXX. This is a nice unaltered example of a true Civil War Cavalry Carbine that is one of the few to escape from being returned and converted to cartridge. Many of these original percussion carbines were carried home after the war where they continued in service as civilian arms. It is also known that many returning soldiers decided to venture to the great unsettled west to start new lives- and their carbines went with them. This one shows use, but no abuse. The action is tight and the six groove bore is fairly bright and excellent. It retains the original Lawrence patent ladder rear sight. markings are correct and show wear, but are legible. Most of the metal is worn to an even gray patina and the stock is fine showing normal handling, but is not chipped or cracked. There is an age crack in the bottom of the forend going from the receiver forward for a few inches and then simply stops. There is evidence of some honest sling ring wear above the ring side plate (usual spot) and the side plate has the "E.A.W." inspector stamping. A good unaltered percussion example of one of the most powerful, reliable, accurate and popular of the Civil War carbines, many of which saw extended service for many years on the frontier.
