Iconic Sharps .52 Caliber FALLING BLOCK!

Here we present an antique Sharps Model 1859 Breech Loading Infantry Rifle, made circa 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut with a production run between 1859 and 1863. There is a reason the good name of Sharps has lasted to the current day, reaching nearly legendary status. Those made prior to and during the American Civil War, from 1861-1865, were popular with the troops. They were handy, accurate, powerful and reliable guns, and many went to the Western Frontier as trappers, explorers and settlers moved that way. In 1867, the government decided to modify many of their percussion arms to cartridge breechloaders by the Sharps Company to fire metallic cartridges, including the Models 1859, 1863, and 1865. Over 30,000 carbines and 1,000 rifles were modified to accept either .52-70 rimfire or .50-70 centerfire cartridges. During the Civil War, the Federal Government purchased over 80,000 of these Model 1859 carbines.

One of the most famous of the Civil War sharpshooting arms, this .52 caliber Sharps used paper cartridge ammunition, and either fulminate of mercury wafers or percussion caps for ignition. In the North, several regiments were provided with this arm by citizens who paid to equip and train them. These regiments repeatedly were able to successfully engage four times their number of their enemy because of the rapid fire capability and accuracy of their Sharps rifles. Some of the more famous units to use this rifle was Colonel Hiram Berdan’s “U.S. Sharp Shooters”, perhaps the first specialty troops in the history of modern warfare, as well as the 5th New York (Duryea’s Zouaves) and the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves (Bucktails). Here’s a nice Sharps still in its original format.

The lock is marked “C. SHARPS PAT./OCT. 16TH 1848” AND “R.S. LAWRENCE PAT/APRIL 12 1859”.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish and patina. The action is strong. The bore is bright with slight frosting throughout; sharp rifling. The stock is solid with expected cosmetic wear and tear. There is a period square repair plug on the left wrist that remains stable. Here is a very Civil War Sharps Cavalry Carbine that has certainly been there and done that and remains a solid and functional piece!
