HEAVILY FRONTIER USED SHARPS 1859 CIVIL WAR CARBINE CONVERTED TO .50-70 FOR INDIAN WAR USAGE. This carbine with serial number 44XXX started out as a percussion cavalry carbine issued to the Union Forces in the Civil War where almost all saw heavy battle use. After the war, around 1867-68, most of these surplus guns were overhauled and converted to the then standard government round .50-70 and reissued for Indian War usage. These were reliable and powerful weapons that were used with great success (along with Spencer Carbines) by the cavalry units in the west until being replaced with the new Springfield 1873 rifles and carbines in .45-70. Once again surplus, many of these Sharps .50-70s found their way back to the frontier where they were effective on all game from antelope to grizzly and bison as well as against two legged adversaries. So, these Sharps carbines are loaded with history from Civil War to Indian Wars to civilian frontier service. Usually a quick visual inspection will detect which of this type weapon remained in store houses and which saw hard use. This is one of the latter and exudes history and adventure! Metal surfaces are an even very aged dark patina with a few minor scattered areas of light rust pitting. Receiver markings are all visible and fairly clear. The barrel retains the correct Lawrence ladder rear sight with small carbine front blade front sight. The wood is the most interesting in that it displays heavy sling ring wear above the retaining ring bar. Further, there is the worn in vertical wear line in the left side of the middle of the stock where the metal sling swivel attached to the leather shoulder strap rubbed. The forend shows saddle wear especially ahead of the barrel band on the right side. The wood shows heavy wear overall, but is solid and not chipped. The action is crisp and surprisingly the three groove rifled bore is still bright and was obviously well maintained! This Sharps has "been there and done that!" A wonderful piece of American history through several time periods!
