Kittredge Shipped Heavy Barrel Sharps Model 1874 45 2 7/8
Description: This is a Sharps Model 1874, SN 161910 (numbers matching) that was shipped from the Bridgeport factory on October 17th, 1877, to B. Kittredge & Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is noted in the factory letter that the heavy Sharps rifles shipped to this location, such as this one, are considered to be "western" guns, as they more often than not went further west. It's original configuration is listed as being .45 2 7/8 (45-110), with a 30 inch octagon barrel, doube set triggers, open sights, and oil finished stocks. the original weight was 14 lbs 9 oz. As can be seen, the rifle isn't quite in it's original state. While the barrel is the original one, it has been shortened to 26 inches - a common modification among buffalo hunters, which brings the weight to a touch over 13 lbs. The buttstock was wrapped in hide, however there does not appear to be any severe structural cracks being hidden underneath. The sights were replaced with non-factory ones - not sure of the origin, however it's clear that they were field modifications. Lastly, a non-factory pewter tip was added - I have not been able to locate the gunsmith who did them in this style, but it would definitely be worth some research. As for the rifle itself; while it does show evidence of hard use, the wood and metal do not show any areas of weakness that would prevent someone from using the rifle once again. There is a small crack near the wrist area, but no wobbles or splinters. The lever has a touch of slack, but could be easily remedied. The action and double set triggers function as they should. The rifling is decent; it remains clearly visible, albeit with some scattered areas of wear. Firing pin is intact. The payment methods listed are the only ones that I will accept. Price includes fully insured shipping. SOLD Antique: Yes |
