Kittredge Shipped Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle
Description: This is a Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle, SN 157247, that was invoiced to B. Kittredge & Co. on August 26th, 1876. It was described as being chambered for a .40 caliber cartridge (40-70 BN), and having a 28 inch barrel; weight was 10 lbs 8 oz. Interestingly, it appears the rifle either returned to the Sharps factory for a new barrel, or the barrel was shipped to the owner, as while it remains as a .40 cal. (40-70 BN) 28 inch barrel and retains a numbers matching serial number, there are remnants of markings for a different configuration rifle on the barrel, with one being stamped "X" indicating it was canceled. There is an upside down "70" on the right side of the barrel near the breach with an X stamped over it, and a weight stamp of "14, 6, 16"; current weight is 11 lbs 5 oz.. With this noted, it appears the barrel was a leftover Mid Range/Long Range barrel that was cut down in order to supply to the customer. This was not uncommon practice for Sharps as they slowly had more and more financial troubles towards the end of the 1870s, and beginning of the 1880s. In addition to those markings, there is a marking of "Y568215" that was crudely carved into the metal on the bottom of the barrel; I am not sure what this number could mean, but it is certainly worth further research. As for the rifle itself, it is in quite good condition. The metal, while showing some signs of being cleaned a very long time ago, retains a nice patina, with much of the original bluing remaining on the barrel. The wood, while likely refinished at some point, is in great condition, with the only real blemish being some hairline cracks near the end of the forearm; the wood is sturdy, and does not wobble. The action and set triggers function as they should. The rifling remains strong, and was clearly well taken care of. Of interest, the rear sight is a Freund pattern modified Sharps semi-buckhorn ladder sight. The front sight is absent, as there was a modern replacement on the rifle when I acquired it; I can include that with the rifle if desired. One of the tang plug screws is absent. All in all, a cool old Sharps that no doubt spend some time out west on the frontier. If you have any questions, or would like any additional photos, do not hesitate to ask. The payment methods listed are the only ones that I will accept. Fully insured shipping is included in the price. SOLD Antique: Yes |
