Original Sharps New Model 1859 SRC Possible ID to 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in Civil War
Description: Original Sharps New Model 1859 SRC Possible ID to 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in CW Offered here for sale and just acquired from an estate in Connecticut is a very fine and original classic Sharps New Model 1859 .52 caliber percussion saddle ring carbine which was issued during the Civil War. This specimen has a 21 inch barrel. 52 caliber and the barrel retains most of its original blue finish mixing with a plum color. Iron furniture on patchbox and front band. Excellent bore with sharp markings. Markings on barrel and receiver are very sharp and clear. Stock is very sound with no cracks. The Springfield Research Service which undertakes research into records in the National Archives in Washington DC by subscription reveals that this may be potentially a carbine that was issued during the Civil War to the 3rd New Jersey volunteer cavalry. While some serial number records are sparse the research service will for a fee do a search for owners which may reveal a serial range match to the exact regiment which was issued the carbine. ?? Serial Number 38522 was manufactured between late 1861 and early 1862. This specimen appears to have been issued in 1864 to that cavalry regiment. Serial number 38522 is noted (or nearby numbers are noted) as potentially being issued to the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry ("Butterfly Regiment"). This regiment was active from early 1864 through the end of the war and served primarily in the Western Theater, including Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. They were known for their flamboyant hussar-style uniforms and their active campaigning. . The 3rd New Jersey Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
