Rare Sharps New Model 1863 Military Rifle Factory 52-70 Rimfire Conversion
Description: Up for sale is a very rarely seen 52-70 rimfire factory conversion of a Sharps New Model 1863 Military Rifle. While exact numbers are unknown, it is safe to say there were very few rimfire conversions performed; even less so when it comes to the military rifles, as there were only 1086 converted to fire cartridge ammunition at all. It is noted on page 318 of Sharps Firearms Volume III, by Marcot, Paxton, and Marron, that Walter Cooper, a well known gunsmith located in Bozeman, Montana, had placed an order for 25 of the 52-70 rimfire conversion military rifles, with the assumption being that he was going to market them to Native Americans. Beyond this, I cannot find any confirmed numbers - maybe there were only 25 made, maybe there were more. As for this rifle, SN C40515 - it is in good condition, while also showing signs of use in the Civil War, along with the American frontier. The wood appears to be an arsenal refurbish/replacement, as it is quite good. The DFC ribbon is still visible on the left side of the buttstock, and the EPR inspector mark is visible near the buttplate. The metal does show signs of pitting in some areas on the patchbox/buttplate, and the barrel. It is noted that the frame, hammer, and lever are all stamped with an "X". This is consistent on all rimfire conversions that I have seen, as it indicates that they were rejected for military service in the Indian Wars, and were instead to be sold on the civilian market. The barrel has not been relined, which is also correct for the rimfire conversions; it retains the original 6 groove rifling, which remains quite good, with only some scattered areas of corrosion. The RSL inspector stamp can be seen on the left side of the barrel, along with the Sharps factory markings on the top, which remain crisp. All in all, a great example of a very rare conversion. The payment methods listed are the only ones that I will accept. Shipping is included in the price, and will be fully insured w/ signature confirmation. SOLD Antique: Yes |
