Sharps Model 1863 Frontier Gunsmith Conversion

This is a rather crude yet clever conversion of a Sharps Model 1863 into a sporting rifle. While most 1863 conversions seen have a new breech block, this one actually retains a percussion breech block that was converted to centerfire. The barrel was evidently taken from a muzzleloader, and is partially marked “D. M…” and “Burli…”. From what I could find, this is most likely D. M. Varney of Burlington, Vermont. The barrel was bored out at some point in it's life, and is now chambered for the 50-70 cartridge. The rifling is good. The buttstock is surplus, but the forearm is frontier made, and I cannot find any other examples like it. The action works perfectly, as does the breech block despite it's odd looks. The metal is worn overall, but I cannot see any pitting. Overall, this is an interesting example of a sporting rifle that was likely built out of necessity from whatever parts they had.
