Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 .50-70 GOVT CAVALRY CARBINE SADDLE RING 1860s CIVIL WAR & WILD WEST US ARMY

Description:
Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 .50-70 GOVT CAVALRY CARBINE SADDLE RING 1860s

CIVIL WAR & WILD WEST US ARMY

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Saddle Ring Carbine, made in Hartford, Connecticut circa 1863-65, then converted to U.S. .50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War.

In the post-Civil War period many of these were updated to fire .50-70 GOVT centerfire cartridges and reissued during the Indian Wars. Some of these arms retained their original six-groove rifling, while the bores of others were re-lined with three-groove rifling, as is this example. New buttstocks without cartridge boxes were used in all cases where replacement was required, regardless of the original configuration. The converted carbines were stamped “DFC” for inspector David F. Clark in a banner cartouche on the side of the stock.

These carbines were issued to the regular cavalry regiments on the western frontier and remained in service until they were replaced by the Springfield Model 1873 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, loading lever and butt plate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The carbine is fitted with the standard folding rear sight and has a sling bar and ring mounted on the left side of the stock and receiver. The right side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps patent marks and the Lawrence and Sharps patent markings. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the Western Frontier, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.

The overall condition is fair. Brown finish throughout. The front sight blade and the rear sight assembly are absent. The action of the hammer and trigger are strong. If unlatched, the lever and breech block fall open for lack of spring tension. The bore is smooth and bright as in void of rifling. The barrel assembly is loose and unscrews easily. The stock shows use and remains solid. There is a faint “DFC” conversion cartouche in the middle of the left side of the butt stock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: .50-70 U.S. GOVT
