Description:
This is an opportunity to own a rare, scarcely encountered custom rolling block rifle by famed Denver gunsmith Morgan L. Rood. Rood was a contemporary and rival of another famous Denver gunsmith, Carlos Gove. Their rivalry was carried out in local newspapers, with boasts and challenges. Article at bottom.
Rood specialized in large caliber single shot rifles for sportsmen and market hunters in the Rocky Mountains. This example was built on a Remington roundtop rolling block action. It was mated to a heavy 33" Octagonal barrel measuring 1.1" across the flats. It is chambered in the classic "Big 50" Sharps (.50-90). Finish is a faded brown with some edge wear. The stocks are Walnut with only minor handling marks. The triggerguard was bent to accommodate a pistol grip preferred by shooters for a more steady hold. Right handed cheekpiece provided additional stability when aiming. Checkered steel buttplate. LOP is 13.5". The tall, long-range vernier tang sight is unmarked. Front sight is an unmarked hooded globe with aperture insert. Barrel mounted rear Rocky Mountain semi-buckhorn sight. Bore is very good. Rifle weighs about 13.25 lbs.
Overall, a very good example of a frontier altered rolling block sporting rifle by a respected and interesting Denver gunsmith. Rifle will ship in a hard plastic guncase inside a shipping carton. Buyer pays actual shipping via USPS Priority Mail insured. $5500 + Shipping.
