Massive Isaac Hollis & Sons London 8 Bore Percussion Dangerous Game Rifle - Rare Antique Victorian Elephant Gun
Description: Very Rare Massive Isaac Hollis & Sons, London, England, Percussion 8 Bore Dangerous Game Rifle, mfg. circa 1865-1875. This is a real deal Victorian big bore stopping rifle capable of taking down the world's largest and deadliest game from water buffalo and lions to hippopotamus and elephant. Specifically intended for use in Africa and India rifles such as this were made famous by legendary hunters such as Frederick Courteney Selous and Sir Samuel Baker. Huge rifled Damascus octagon barrel measures 28 3/16" long and over 1 5/8" wide across the breech tapering to 1 ¼" at the muzzle. Inside diameter of the bore measures approximately .845". Fitted with a dovetailed iron blade front sight and three-leaf rear sight graduated from 100-300 yards. The lock is inscribed “I. HOLLIS & SONS” and twice marked with their IH&S logo encircled by “MAKERS TO HER MAJESTYS WAR DEPARTMENT”. Address on barrel is obscured with only a portion of “LONDON” visible. Nicely engraved throughout in typical English scrolls. The barrel and furniture have a dark plum/gray patina overall with the lock finished white. There is some heavy pitting scattered along the top and left side of the barrel toward the breech, otherwise remaining surfaces are generally smooth. Robust stock features a checkered wrist, engraved iron patchbox, and nickel silver nameplate with much original/period varnish remaining. The wood has an attractive rich color with sharp checkering and a blackened patina forming throughout on the left side. Several old repaired cracks along the left side of the forearm. Huge 6" tall iron buttplate with engraved triggerguard and nickel silver nosecap. Wedge is loose but barrel is secure in stock. Original iron ramrod pipes with wonderful original massive brass capped wood ramrod. Action is very strong and crisp and functions flawlessly. Clean original nipple. Fairly bright bore with good clean, sharp, seven-groove rifling front to back and light/moderate fine blackpowder frosting throughout. Weight is 11 lbs 15 oz. True elephant guns of this size and age are extremely rare and harken back to the romanticized golden age of classic safari hunting. A real piece of history that makes a big statement in any gun room or den! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
