ISSUED AND IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR POULTNEY & TRIMBLE SMITH CAVALRY CARBINE
Description: Consignment item, one of many from a large collection of 1850s and 1860s percussion firearms. Please see my other listings for more items. Poultney & Trimble Smith Cavalry Carbine, serial number 3423, caliber .50 percussion, single shot breech loader, blued and case hardened finish, walnut stocks, 21 5/8 part octagon barrel with brass blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight, sling bar and ring on left side of receiver, which Springfield Research Survey shows direct issue to Company H, 2nd West Virginia Cavalry. The records at the National Archives indicate this carbine was issued to David Bartoe, age 20, enlisted as a Corporal on 9/7/1861. Included as provenance are Corporal Bartoe's muster records (34 pages, all couldn't be pictured), 1861 enlistment document, 1863 re-enlistment document, 33 pages of pension records, family history including gravesite/final resting place, and a unit history of the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry. In a time when many died young due to wounds, disease, etc., Corporal Bartoe went to meet the Lord on 19 December 1922, at the ripe old age of 81! CONDITION: Serial numbers match on both bottom halves of the action. Butt stock sound, having an extra coat of linseed oil or varnish over the old scratches and dings, with two cartouches on the left wrist. Fore arm generally good except for a small piece missing right side rear at breech; also has an extra coat of finish. Hammer spring fairly strong, holds at half cock and full cock. Barrel 70% original dull finish turned plum with some hints of bright blue. Receiver also has hints of the original case hardening under some dark patina/browning. Hinged action is tight and functions properly. Excellent bore, bright and shiny with sharp rifling, just a hint of fouling. Butt plate at toe and bottom receiver tang at rear have "R" sub inspector marks. "L.F.R." sub inspector mark on left side of octagon barrel flat at breech. Grades NRA Antique Very Good. Incredible amount of Civil War and personal history attached to this firearm and trooper. TERMS: No international sales and no sales to Alaska or Hawaii.
