Regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 77 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 115 Enlisted men by disease. Total 196. This is a typical Smith carbine, having walnut stocks, blued barrel, case hardened receiver and hammer, brass plunger to release the action, single shot, 50 caliber percussion, open sights, sling bar and loop on left side of receiver. CONDITION: Well used with two plug repairs to both stocks (one plug goes right through the cartouche on the left side), replaced front sight blade, small piece of fore arm repaired at right side just ahead of receiver, light surface rust (not pitted and might clean off carefully), no case colors remaining on hammer and receiver. Barrel has 70% coverage of a dark blue. Barrel hinge is very tight but will open, revealing a surprising near excellent bore, having sharp rifling and only minor scattered black powder oxidation, very bright. Hammer will cock but does not fire, so some internal work will be required (if desired) to make it work again. Other than the front sight blade, all parts are original, with several small sub-inspector initials showing. This carbine definitely "saw the elephant" with hard use in the West Virginia mountains and later in Virginia during the Civil War, and is worthy of further repair and research.
